The meaning of the mother tongue is a child’s first language or native language. A commonly spoken language, the selection of words and expressions are different among cultures is inquisitive and asking questions in one language is intrusive.  Mother tongue is referenced with the language a child uses from birth an important impact in a child’s life. The mother tongue to a child is more than a language it involves personal, social and cultural identity.

The few reasons why it is important to know our mother language-

Intellectual Development:

Studies have shown that people who are fluent in their mother tongue, their cognitive development, and intellectual development is faster. If a student is taught in his/her mother tongue educational success is higher than someone who is taught in a different medium other than their mother tongue.

Good connection with your culture:

Languages play an important role in keeping our culture alive. Translation of one language to another language does not carry the same essence as its source language. Thus, the best way to thoroughly know one's culture is to know about their language. The mother tongue helps us to stay connected to our culture and roots.

Second language articulation:

If one grasps their mother tongue, it is easy for him or her to master a new language. When a child reads out loud their mother language, they develop strong literacy skills in other languages.

Commercial Benefits:

If one learns their mother language, to do business in their area becomes easy as they know how to read a local newspaper and can interact well. The opportunities related to monetizing with the help of one’s mother are vast in today’s market scenario.

Pride:

Knowing mother language is a matter of pride. It boasts one’s confidence, creates awareness in an individual’s mind that helps to connect with their cultural identity in a better way.

As children’s education is in their second language, parents interact with them in the second language which creates confusion. As a result, they are not able to perform well in a first or second language.
