France mourns after 84 killed

Hind Matters in Britain offers is condolences to the tragic loss of life over the attacks carried out by a man who drove a lorry into crowds celebrating France’s Bastille Day.

The latest death toll is 84 and is expected to rise as many more were injured. A white lorry drove slowly through the promenade before speeding up and swirling several times to hit the crowds after a fireworks display.

Thousands of people had gathered to mark the French national day on the Promenade des Anglais in the southern city of Nice.

World leaders have been vocal in their outrage at the attack and expressed dismay, sadness and solidarity. Prime Minister Modi of India twitted:

 “Appalled by the horrific attack in Nice. I strongly condemn such mindless acts of violence. My thoughts are with the families of deceased.”

And India’s president, President Pranab Mukherjee further added on twitter: “I am shocked to hear about the terrorist attack…  …India stands shoulder to shoulder with the people and Government of France as it responds to this attack…We will strengthen our cooperation with France and other countries in the fight against terrorism…Heartfelt condolences to families of bereaved; prayers for speedy recovery of injured in attack.”

The American president, Barack Obama stated: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and other loved-ones of those killed.”

France has been suffering a spate of attacks in recent months. The driver of the lorry was shot dead by police. It is not clear whether he had any accomplices. It looks most likely a terrorist incidence, but not group has claimed responsibility or whether the driver was acting alone and not part of a wider terrorist cell.

In Britain, a statement from Downing Street said: “We are shocked and concerned by the scenes there. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this terrible incident on what was a day of national celebration.:
