Modi’s Diwali Present

The Festival of Diwali is well on its way. In the UK it is becoming remarkably popular as the broader media outlets cover the event. This year there is added coverage as the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi lands on British soil during the festive time.

Every year the Prime Minister marks Diwali by inviting guests to Downing Street. Near the PM’s residence, this year you will also see the Modi Express blue bus which has made headlines – who knows PM Modi may actually use the bus for his travels to Wembley Stadium where 60,000 people are expected to give him rapturous welcome.

According to Government sources, there are some serious matters to discuss. British and Indian officials are expected to make deals on key issues relating to defence, security and climate change.

Mr Modi’s visit during Diwali has helped greatly with publicising his visit as well as helping Diwali to get profiles in the mainstream. When it comes to making an impact internationally, Mr Modi is winning. He still has plenty of concerns to deal with in India as his party just lost a major election in Bihar where even his magic did not help to persuade the electorate.

Mr Modi will be meeting the British Prime Minister David Cameron as well having lunch with The Queen at Buckingham Palace. He is expected to address Parliament and continued his talks at the Mr Cameron’s country residence, the Chequers.Reported on the BBC, Mr Cameron said the visit marked “a historic opportunity” for Britain and India to help each other prosper.“It’s an opportunity for two countries, tied by history, people and values, to work together to overcome the biggest challenges of our age,” Mr Cameron said.“Prime Minister Modi and I intend to grab that opportunity with both hands.”

It will be the Wembley extravaganza that will get him a worldwide audience. Mr Modi is expected to make a speech in Hindi which seems more geared for the worldwide audience than the fans at Wembley whom many of cannot speak Hindi.It will no doubt be a great event – but his past will also be there as a reminder as protestors will gather regarding the Gujarat riots, Sikh community’s grievances and the censorship of Leslee Udwin’s film.
